Context for the glitch on the stage select screen: Its actually just a big hack, which is there because the intro animation of the 3 seperating segments sliding in is "still playing" but not doing anything. This artifact actually happends any time two parts of the screen scroll independently (for reasons i won't go into in this comment) but you can see the same effect on the split between the grass and sky during the ending cutscene. In the case of the stage select it could easily have been cut out, but was probably just another crunch for time.

Johnny is the much faster and more powerful of the two. He moves faster in the air and his powerful attack in the air helps him blitz through enemies. Lecarde is locked to the ground where he can't gain any ground while attacking. Also, you can regain the super subweapons by collecting two of the same subweapon. Which is pretty easy.

I actually had an experience similar to this on Victory Road Cave long ago, I was down to one HM pokemon who was poisoned, and I had to get through two levels, on top of resetting anytime I got into a battle with either a trainer or random battle. Because I just didn't have the HP at the time. I had only some regular potions left. But I counted thos steps tediously till I got back out.
